A lakefront lot is one of the best places in the world to have a deck — and one of the most demanding to build on. Between the view, the wind, and constant moisture, a lakeshore deck needs to be designed differently than a typical backyard build. Here are seven ideas we love for West Michigan waterfront homes.
1. Multi-level decks that follow the slope
Most lakefront lots in Muskegon, Holland, and Grand Haven slope toward the water. Instead of fighting it, a multi-level deck steps down the grade — creating distinct zones for dining, lounging, and taking in the view.
2. Cable or glass railings for an unobstructed view
You bought the lake view — don’t block it with bulky wood railings. Cable railings and glass panels keep sightlines open while staying code-compliant and safe.
3. Moisture-proof materials
Constant lake humidity is brutal on wood. For waterfront homes we usually recommend PVC or capped composite decking, which shrugs off moisture, rot, and fading far better than traditional lumber.
4. A covered section for Michigan weather
Lakeshore weather turns fast. A roofed or covered section of the deck gives you shade on hot afternoons and a dry spot when a storm rolls in off the water — extending how many days a year you actually use the deck.
5. Built-in seating and storage
Built-in benches keep the deck clear and give you a place to stash cushions and life jackets. On a windy lakefront lot, fewer loose chairs to chase is a real benefit.
6. Deck lighting for long summer evenings
Recessed stair lights, railing lighting, and post caps let you enjoy the deck after sunset — safely — without floodlighting the whole shoreline.
7. A path or stairs down to the water
Well-built steps from the deck to the dock or beach tie the whole property together and make the waterfront genuinely usable.
Designing for the lakeshore takes experience
Waterfront builds come with extra considerations — wind load, moisture, slope, and sometimes shoreline setback rules. We’ve built for West Michigan lake homes and design for the conditions, not against them.
